If you’ve been out on the water with Maya’s Legacy Whale Watching, you might have noticed that we love talking about whales. While it’s a big part of the job, we also love to talk whales even when we're not on the water! This has carried over into a podcast called “After the Breach”, hosted by two of our professional guides and whale watch captains, Jeff Friedman and Sara Shimazu.
The two were out on the water in Haro Strait one summer evening when they first discussed the possibility of a podcast. It was just an offhand comment at first, but it came up time and again as they traveled to see whales in other parts of the world. In 2020, right as the pandemic hit, Jeff and Sara came up with the name while out on the Southern Ocean, watching the Bremer Canyon orcas play in the rough seas. After the Breach. A nod to their love of photography and an inside joke shared with anyone that’s tried to photograph whales.
It took a while to find time in their busy schedules to lay out the podcast but now they’re celebrating their first year of hosting “After the Breach”. Their latest episode welcomes researcher Jared Towers who joins the duo to talk about the elusive Type-D Antarctic killer whales.
Whether you’ve already joined us on a whale watching & wildlife tour or haven’t yet been on the water with us, check out the podcast to hear about interesting whale topics, latest sightings here in the Salish Sea and around the world, and more.
